Concrete Polishing

Surface Designs of Oklahoma specializes in polished concrete. Polishing concrete is similar to sanding wood. To grind down surfaces to the desired level of shine and smoothness, heavy-duty polishing machines are equipped with diamond-impregnated segments, or disks, with progressively finer grits (similar to sandpaper).
As part of the process, coarse diamond segments are bonded in a metallic matrix. In preparation for final smoothing, these segments are coarse enough to remove minor pits, blemishes, stains, or light coatings from the floor. The rough grinding process is generally a three to four step process, depending on the condition of the concrete. Diamond abrasives are then embedded in a plastic or resin matrix that are used to fine grind the concrete surface. Floors are polished with even-finer grits of polishing disks (called lapping) until the desired sheen is achieved. A final grit of 1500 or finer can be used if a high glossy finish is desired. Polishing crews who are experienced can identify when to switch to the next-finer grit by observing the material being removed and the floor surface.

As part of the polishing process, an internal impregnating sealer is applied. Invisible to the naked eye, the sealer sinks into the concrete. This coating not only protects the concrete from the inside out, but also hardens and densifies it. This eliminates the need for a topical coating, which significantly lowers maintenance.

Polishing brings out the natural beauty of concrete by smoothing its surface. Concrete is grinded multiple times to achieve an even and pristine finish. Optional dyes may be applied, followed by the hardener. The final step involves grinding the surface to bring out the luster.
